HKSQ Student Project Competition 2014 - Presentation

The HKSQ Company Based Student Project Competition offers an opportunity for students to work on an actual industrial case and propose resolution annually. This allows them to gain experience of resolving an industrial problem. We had joint sponsors of this year’s Competition and they were Woodley Agri-Service Company Limited and Green Technology Consortium (httbbp://www.green-tech-consortium.org) and Woodley Agri-Service Company Limited. The field trip was hosted by Hong Kong Organic Waste Resources Centre (HKOWRC) (有機資源再生中心). The final session for different teams suggestion/solution presentation was held on 29 Mar 2014. Previous sessions (Briefing and Plant Visit) stated in reference.

In the beginning, Mr. Peter Fung (Vice-Chairman, HKSQ) presented the rules of the HKSQ Student Project Competition 2014 presentation. There were two topics as below:
Topic 1: To improve the process of turning collected food waste into high value animal feed.
Topic 2: To develop a method for effective collection and segregation of food waste so as to facilitate subsequent processes.

We invited three guests and two HKSQ exco members into our judge panel. They are Mr. Kwok Ming Cheung (Managing Director of Woodley Agri-Service Company Limited), Ms. Angela Wong (Exco member of HKSQ), Mr. Henry Ngai (CEO, HKOWRC), Mr. Eddie Chan (President, HKOWRC) and Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman of HKSQ).

The first presentation team (Team B) was from CityU and they studied Topic 2. Six sigma DMAIC techniques were employed to analysis the problem.

Two things were bright included Compliment Label Scheme and self-made two-color separation design of Food Waste Storing Box.

The second presentation team (Team H) also come from PolyU and they studied Topic 1. They proposed to use microwave rapid drying machine turning the remained food into animal feed.

The third presentation team (Team G) was studied at PolyU and their study was in Topic 1. They proposed long-term solution such as “Green Pork”.

They also proposed to use Vibrated Fluidized Bed Dryer which provided gentle transportation by fluidization and vibration at 5-25 Hz, as well as, low gas rate chosen so that gas bubbling in the fluidized bed is avoided, generally reducing particle damages during to dry the food waste.

The fourth presentation team (Team D) was studied at CUHK and they studied the Topic 2. They proposed to use different color bins to collect meats, vegetables and cereals from kitchen and using cellulose to decompose food waste. They said “No Money No Talk, No Money No Action!”.

The fifth presentation team (Team A) was from CityU and their solution was for Topic 2. They suggested to use different color plastic bags to categorize types of food wastes.

They employed color separation smart camera to identify vegetable and other low protein value food. Moreover, they prepared short simulation video in Youtube.

The sixth presentation team (Team I) was from HKUST and they studied Topic 2 but they also mixed some part of Topic 1. Their presentation flow was Objective, Flow of our plan, logistics planning, segregation, black solider fly.

The logistics analysis was good in order to reduce the transportation fee.

Team E was the seventh presentation team from CUHK and they studied the Top 1 to produce high value animal feed from food waste. They benchmarked the dehydration technique from Sludge to Food Waste.

Team J was the eighth presentation team from HKUST and they selected Top 2 to develop a method for effective collection and segregation of food waste. They identified the problem to be low incentive because recycle food waste was costly but disposal was easy.

They suggested to use centrifuge principle for food waste processing and designed a downstream workflow.

The ninth presentation team (Team F) was from PolyU and their study was in the Topic 1 to improve the process of dehydration on food waste. They used cause and effect technique to identify the root cause.

They proposed the oil content modified design of the pipe for dehydration and made the prototype model.

Moreover, Team F had performed an experiment to confirm the efficiency.

The last presentation team (Team C) come from CityU and they studied on the Topic 2. They visited wet market and observed a large amount of well separated food waste.

HKIE MI Symposium – Innovation and Technology for Business Evolution

The Annual Symposium theme entitled “Innovation and Technology for Business Evolution” was organized by Manufacturing & Industrial Division (MI) of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), and co-organized by the Institute of Systematic Innovation, Hong Kong (ISIHK) and Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on 28 March 2014. Hong Kong Society for Quality was one of supporting organizations. The objective of this symposium would showcase the integrated power of innovation and technology in translating ideas to new products, high quality services and efficient practices, etc.

In the beginning, Ir. Prof. Keith CHAN (Professor and Head, ISE Dept., PolyU) gave a welcome speech.

Ir. Victor CHEUNG (Senior Vice President, HKIE) gave an officiating address.

Ir. Daniel CHENG (MH, JP, Deputy Chairman, Federation of Hong Kong Industries) was the keynote speaker and the topic named “Business Evolution with the Future China”. Firstly, Ir. CHENG reviewed the past three decades of China economic and manufacturing. It observed the labor cost rose 12% annually (from 2002 to 2012).

He said China moved toward higher end products, cleaner production and to grow R&D expenditure today. Moreover, Daniel quoted Justin Yifu Lin (Chinese economist and former Chief Economist and Senior VP of the World Bank) predication that “China would relocate its labor-intensive factories to Africa in next 30 years.” If you don’t want to go to Africa, we needed to move toward automation, robotics, energy-nuclear, coal gasification, space technology, mass transportation and electric vehicle, etc.

Ir. Peter CHAK (Past Chairman of HKIE – MI Division) was moderator of the first panel discussion and he introduced guest speakers.

The first speaker was Ir. Dr. Victor LO (Founding Director, ISIHK) and his topic entitled “Development of a Practical Innovation Model for Problem Solving”. He introduced PKIR (問知創行) innovation model and its implementation tools. Dr. Lo defined Innovation should contain Needs, New, Function and Value-added (NNFV). (Dr. Lo also brief it in HKSQ & ISIHK seminars at http://qualityalchemist.blogspot.hk/2013/12/hksq-seminar-on-innovative-total.html & http://qualityalchemist.blogspot.hk/2013/08/isi-seminar-summer-networking-2013.html )

Dr. Lo said Plan-Do-Check-Act had been used since 1960s. Now he added Innovation element into PDCA to PKIR model. He believed the butterfly effect that “A small innovation initiative may change the future of a company”. Finally, he said why people can’t be more innovative because “Fear of being judged”. We needed a dream zone without fear to generate new ideas. The next speaker would show how this idea implemented in Towngas.

The second speaker was Ir. James TO (Principal-Towngas Engineering Academy, The Hong Kong and China Gas Co. Ltd.) and his presentation named “We shape lives by revolutionizing the way things are made”. Ir. James To introduced the history of Towngas and it established in 1862.

Ir. To said Towngan was a dynamic organization and they implemented TQM in 1992, BPR in 1996, Key Management Focuses in 1998, We Deliver scheme in 2003, Go for Launch for 2003 to 2007, Reaching New Heights from 2008 to 2012, and Expanding New Horizons was planned from 2013 to 2017. The Towngas Culture was that “Effective Management Structure improves Quality, Productivity & Efficiency Continuously.”

Then they introduced PKIR model (Systematic Innovation thinking) into Superior Quality Service (SQS) and became Innovative SQS (iSQS). There were six steps to iSQS included Culture, CT Model, SQS Tool, Ecosystem, Motivation and Management System. One of top management commitments was to create innovative ecosystem named Dream Zone. Lastly, Ir. James To stated Towngas’ Growth is equal to Innovation times Implementation (G = I^2).

The Third speaker was Mr. Vincent LAM (Consumables Business Manager, Stratasys AP Ltd (3D Printing)) and his topic entitled “We shape lives by revolutionizing the way things are made”. Mr. Lam introduced the background of Stratasys and its key technologies included PolyJet, Thermoplastics, etc. He said the requirement of the world design about first in the market, fast at getting there, confident and cheap. Time to Market (TTM) was the most important but shorter the TTM didn’t mean lower quality assurance. It was because 3D printing could be “Compression of Time”, reducing “Cost of Error”, “Creativity” and “Confidentiality”. In future, Stratasys vision was to be 3D printing plant, Home-Use 3D Printer and Fashion Demonstration with color capability.
