Technical Visit to Philips Consumer Lifestyle Zhuhai

HKSQ arranged a technical visit to Philips Consumer Lifestyle Zhuhai (hereafter, Philips CL Zhuhai) factory on 20 April 2012. Philips CL Zhuhai dedicated for manufacturing Consumer Lifestyle products included Health Care, Shavers and Garment Care products. It started operation in 1990 and currently had about 1400 employees.

Our vice-chairman Mr. Humphrey Lee was the leader for this technical visit. He introduced the schedule of technical visit and briefed the background of Philips Consumer Lifestyle Zhuhai to participants.

Then I introduce background and mission of Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) to the participants.

Firstly, We had a lunch in the restaurant near the factory.


There were 36 participants joined the technical visit and the ratio of member and non-member was about 50:50.  


After lunch, we arrived the Philips CL Zhuhai factory.

All visitor needed to register their name and ID.

Firstly, Mr. Arrom He (General Manager, Philips CL Zhuhai) introduced the run down of the visit. The run down included Simply Philips introduction, Visit Gemba (APD model line, APD OHC production area, PPD moulding Kaizens and QA Lab) and the last one was Q&A session.

Mr. Arrom He brief the quality of CL as follows:
- Manufacturing Quality Performance
- QA Lab Testing Competence
- System and Tools Application
- People Competency Development


Then he introduced different types of products. He also mentioned the vision of excellence - From "Pockets of Excellence" ... to "The Industry Benchmark!".

After that Mr. Albert Chen introduced "Simply Philips" deployment. It separated into 5 phases. They were "Forming", "Storming", "Norming", "Transforming" and "Performing". He said "Processes Highlight Problem, People Solve Them." For example, company like a people, and the culture of company like a people's characteristic.

The philosophy of Simply Philips was shown in the following diagram. Then we visited the production line. We found that every unit had Key Performance Indicators which included People, Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost (PSQDC). Moreover, they employed 3C table to solve the problem. 3C indicated Concern, Cause and Countermeasure.

Before Q&A session, we enjoyed their short video about Philips CL Zhuhai factory open day. It would be held on 11 May 2012.

At the end, I represented HKSQ to present a flag to Mr. Albert Chen.
